Dance students perform in dance competitions for many reasons. The choice to perform is often not the child's choice, although, in my experience the chance to dress up in a lovely, sparkly costume and dance onstage, then receiving praise and applause - and even a trophy or medal, is very appealing to a child.
Is the child 'successful' if he/she wins first prize? Is he/she successful because after practicing for many weeks the child got to the end of the dance without forgetting the steps, or running off stage?
Is the child successful because they performed their dance to a level of their personal best, and therefore shows improvement.
What are the reasons parents and teachers put children into dance competitions?
